The daughter of Lt. Col. Anthony C. Shine, USAF (Missing in Action from 1972-1996), Ms. Shine is a spokesman for the POW/MIA issue. Following graduation from Wellesley College in 1986, Ms. Shine served as Director of Public Affairs for the National League of POW/MIA Families, a Washington, DC based non-profit organization dedicated to the fullest possible accounting for Americans still prisoner or missing from the Vietnam War.
In this position and since, Ms. Shine has responded to national and international media interest in the POW/MIA issue, providing informed policy and political viewpoint as well as emotional perspective and insight. Her extensive television experience includes the McNeil Lehrer News Hour, Good Morning America, The Today Show, Pittsburgh Today, The Oprah Winfrey Show, CNN’s Sonia Live, Nightline, Japanese, German, British, Dutch and Italian features and numerous press conferences and news programs. Radio experience includes various talk and news programs for ABC, NBC, CBS, BBC, VOA, Ireland, Austrian and Canadian stations. Print media experience includes work with local, national and international magazines, newspapers and civic publications including Life Magazine, Redbook, New York Times, LA Times, Washington Post and Tampa Tribune.
In addition, Ms. Shine has assisted in reviewing various manuscripts, screenplays and Vietnam related programs to promote historical accuracy, effectiveness and sensitivity to the POW/MIA issue. She is a frequent speaker across the nation to communities, students, civic groups, military and Veterans organizations, and has been an avid advocate for Veterans issues on Capitol Hill. Ms. Shine traveled to Vietnam in 1994, 1995 and 1998 to achieve progress on the POW/MIA issue and her father’s case.
Ms. Shine has served as a member of the Board of Directors of the National League of POW/MIA Families, Sons and Daughters in Touch and Gold Star Children, and closely supports the work of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund and Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors. In addition, Ms. Shine is the family liaison for the USAF top gun fighter pilot award presented annually in her father’s name.
