In preparation for the upcoming National POW/MIA Recognition Day, a volunteer clean-up day was held on Saturday, 23 August. Big John Sutherland, Bob, Willen, Dano Mastrolia, and Billy Hendrix expertly led two teams of the FD Roosevelt Jacksonville Sea Cadets in scrubbing the F-18 Hornet and A-7 Corsair II at the Memorial site. Over two dozen Sea Cadets, their leaders and parents, made up the wash teams. The aircraft have never looked better since being positioned on the Memorial’s NAS Cecil Field Heritage Plaza!
Inside the building Pam, Richard Geer and Ken Tuschhoff worked a myriad of projects. Along with the plane wash and museum work, a team of 4th Assault Amphibian Battalion “Iron Gator” Marines, composed of 1st Sgt Arango, and Lance Corporals SanchezValdez, Vyas, Blanco, and Petit, did some heavy lifting and moving of construction material and power-washing outside. Despite a late morning storm, the Marines worked right through it to get the job done. Some photos of the Volunteer Day attached. Another Volunteer day is scheduled for 13 September, for final sprucing in time for 20 September.
The National POW/MIA Memorial and Museum recognizes the efforts of DPAA, whose mission it is, as the Department of Defense agency responsible for accounting, to fulfill the United States' sacred obligation to bring home as many of our nation's missing as possible.
